What you'll learn

In this session, Steve — one of Williams OT’s driving instructors, teacher, and parent of two neurodivergent adults — shares practical advice for families starting the driving journey. You’ll discover what makes early driving lessons so critical, how to reduce overwhelm and build safe habits, and what to look for in a supportive, neuro-affirming instructor.

You’ll also learn how parents can complement formal lessons by reinforcing key routines, celebrating small wins, and working collaboratively with instructors and occupational therapists. This video helps you feel confident, informed, and ready to guide your teen safely and calmly into independent driving.

Importantly, this program does not replace or remove the need for personalised 1:1 driving lessons or occupational therapy driving assessments, where applicable. Practical experience with a qualified instructor remains essential to developing safe driving skills.
