Strategic Thinking: Coping with Bad Weather

Driving in the rain isn’t just about the road—it’s about how we prepare for the road. Let’s talk strategy, safety, and sensory challenges for learner drivers, especially in unpredictable weather.

Course Details

In this session, Brad explores the practical and strategic skills every learner driver needs when the weather isn’t on their side. From the moment you check the forecast the night before, you’re setting your learner up for success. This isn’t just about windscreen wipers and demisters—it’s about managing the whole experience.

We look at how temperature, clothing, and even footwear affect comfort and safety, especially for those with sensory sensitivities. You’ll see how poor visibility and cold weather can overwhelm the senses and how language like “miserable weather” can be confusing for some learners. Brad explains how to communicate clearly, supportively, and how to help your learner stay regulated—before, during, and after a drive.

Whether your young driver is just starting out or you’re building toward more independence, this session gives you the tools to plan ahead and reduce overwhelm when the skies are grey. It’s not about avoiding the drive—it’s about preparing for it.
